Cancer, Caregivers, and Comedy: Two Chicago Women Bring Their Story of Survival to New York

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 12, 2015

BeeFAB Productions, a Chicago-based theater company, is bringing its new show, “Tales of a Stage 4 Cancer,” to Chelsea’s Magnet Theater for its New York debut on Monday, May 4, 2015.

Written and performed by Judy Fabjance and Kelly Beeman, “Tales” is a collection of satire, comedy, and touching stories about the brutal strength of newlyweds facing the daily grim realities of The Big C – softened by the humor of the unexpected bittersweet revelations.

“Anyone who has been affected by cancer in any way will relate to this show,” says Fabjance. “We’ve had doctors and nurses come to our show and tell us that they now have a better understanding of what their patients go through.”

When Fabjance produced her first one-woman show, “Are You There, Judy? It’s me, Cancer” in 2011, she was already a three-year survivor after a right mastectomy. Last year she married Beeman, who became her primary caretaker.

Beeman calls “Tales” a love story. “So many people feel like they are trapped in this depressing, scary story. We want to help them find the humor, find the lighter side; find the release.”

Through sketches, songs, and monologues, Beeman and Fabjance tackle everything from restrictive diets to their sex life to the questionable motives of cancer’s so-called “Big Pink” industry.

Their satirical perspective is rooted in their training at the Chicago’s Second City Conservatory, where Fabiance has been an instructor since 1999, where she worked and studied with Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, and many other comedic luminaries who have supported Fabjance through every step of her arduous journey. Colbert even provided an autographed book for a silent auction as a fundraiser for the cause, listing the book’s actual value as “priceless.”

Beeman writes and performs in training sketches for Lambda Legal, Personal Pac, and Motorola, where she also has a day job as a reliability engineer.

Babe’s mythical stature was established in 1927 when, as a member of “Murderer’s Row”, he set a new homerun record of 60, a record that would stand for 34 years. During his time with the Yankees, Babe ignited the greatest dynasty in all of American sport. Prior to his arrival, the Yankees had never won a title of any kind. After joining the Yankees prior to the 1920 season, Babe helped the Yankees capture seven pennants and four World Series titles. The 1927 team is still considered by many to be the greatest in baseball history. Upon retiring from the Boston Braves in 1935, Babe held an astonishing 56 major league records at the time, including the most revered record in baseball… 714 home runs. Despite passing over 66 years ago, Babe still remains the greatest figure in major league baseball, and one of the true icons in American history. The Babe helped save baseball from the ugly Black Sox scandal, and gave hope to millions during The Great Depression. He impacted the game in a way never seen before, or since. He continues to be the benchmark by which all other players are measured. Despite last playing nearly 75 years ago; Babe is still widely considered the greatest player in Major League Baseball history. This Babe Ruth Home Run Hero Baseball Learning, Visualization and Affirmation program accelerates your learning of baseball hitting skills and will raise your hitting confidence to a much higher level. Once these principles are implemented into your game both on the field and off the field you’ll experience an added level of baseball power, dominance and confidence that you previously only dreamed possible.

Society for Vascular Medicine Remedies Inaccuracies in New York Times Medicare Article

Deerfield, IL (PRWEB) February 03, 2015

The Society for Vascular Medicine (http://www.vascularmed.org) read with disappointment the New York Times article, “Medicare Payments Surge for Stents to Unblock Blood Vessels in Limbs,” noting a series of inaccuracies that limit the discussion of this very important topic.

First, through the Choosing Wisely initiative (http://www.choosingwisely.org), the Society for Vascular Medicine does not warn that people typically do not need invasive treatment for peripheral artery disease (PAD). Our recommendation states, “[providers should] Refrain from percutaneous or surgical revascularization of peripheral artery stenosis in patients without claudication or critical limb ischemia,” warning against inappropriate use in patients who do not have leg symptoms.

Second, the article decries the surge in vascular procedures, focusing on peripheral artery interventions. However, as the figure in the article clearly shows, artery interventions have been relatively stable since 2006. As noted in the figure, vein interventions have more than doubled over this time period, but warrant scant attention in this article.

Third, the article underestimates significantly the prevalence of PAD in the United States. The best estimates suggests that 1 in 5 men and 1 in 6 women has peripheral artery disease in the Medicare population (patients 65 years or older) (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14709362). This misconception prevents physicians and patients from getting life saving care: patients with PAD have a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular death.

Fourth, and perhaps most importantly, the article notes twice that most PAD patients can be treated with exercise alone. Unfortunately, despite extensive clinical evidence that exercise training improves leg symptoms for patients with PAD and is cost effective compared to intervention, Medicare does not cover supervised exercise programs for PAD as it does for heart and lung disease. The prescription for exercise without supervision has been shown to fail time and again. Unfortunately, because of the lack of Medicare coverage for supervised exercise therapy, most PAD patients do not have access to the safest and most cost effective therapies for this disease. The failure of Medicare to pay for inexpensive, effective exercise therapy, while being willing to pay for expensive interventional therapy, warrants further discussion.

The Society for Vascular Medicine strongly endorses the appropriate use of therapies to improve the quality and length of life for patients with vascular disease. We decry inappropriate use of any therapy and have an ongoing commitment to improving the lives of our patients, as well as better understanding of vascular disease. We believe that there is both overuse and underuse of medical and invasive therapies, but the misinterpretation of information only hinders progress towards improving the lives of our patients.

New York Citys Cabaret Crown Jewel, Grammy Winner Lady Rizo Makes Teatro ZinZanni Debut in Seattle

SEATTLE, WA (PRWEB) January 15, 2015

The cast of Seattle’s internationally recognized Teatro ZinZanni – a whirlwind show of international cirque, comedy and cabaret served up with a scrumptious multi-course feast and elegant libations inside an authentic, antique speigeltent – has just been announced! The Hot Spot is the latest concoction from ZinZanni and it features Northwest-native and international cabaret star Lady Rizo in her Teatro ZinZanni debut alongside actor and improv mastermind Frank Ferrante, acclaimed aerialist and choreographer to the stars Dreya Weber, vaudevillian Wayne Doba, acrobat-dancer Andrea Conway Doba, funny-man Joel Salom, and show-stoppers, Vertical Tango with co-direction by Teatro ZinZanni founder Norm Langill, long-time performer and exquisite improvisational artist Kevin Kent, and the return of director/choreographer Tobias Larsson.

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, “slapstick chanteuse” (Village Voice) Lady Rizo has come a long way since her graduation from Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts. These days, Lady Rizo is New York City’s cabaret crown-jewel – The New York Times declares her “sensational!” She is a Grammy winner for her 2010 collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma on the holiday album “Songs of Joy and Peace,” the winner of the inaugural Time Out London and Soho Theatre Award, a 2013 London Cabaret Award-winner, and she was received with critical raves three years in a row at the Assembly Festival in Edinburgh. A recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, her original pieces have shown at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre in New York (where she was a resident artist for three years), Leister Square Theatre in London, and the Sydney Festival (nominee for a 2013 Helpmann award).

Formidable talent Dreya Weber also stars in The Hot Spot. Celebrated for her work with pop-sensation Pink conceiving and choreographing her buzz-worthy aerial performances at the 2010 and 2014 Grammy Award ceremonies, contributing aerial support to the recent “The Truth About Love“ tour as well as choreographing the artist’s new Cover Girl commercials, Weber is also an acclaimed actress, musician and producer. Known around the world for her work with fitness giant P90X and P90X X-Box workouts, Dreya has choreographic credits with some of the biggest names in pop music including Michael Jackson, Cher, Madonna, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and others.

Joining the ranks of these powerhouse women is Frank Ferrante, an actor and director whose acting and improvisation has been dubbed “masterful” by the Chicago Tribune and “artful” by The New York Times. Frank originated the title role in Groucho: A Life in Revue written by Groucho’s son Arthur in New York, London and on PBS. He earned New York’s Theatre World Award, a NY Outer Critics Circle and London’s Laurence Olivier nomination for ‘Comedy Performance of the Year.’ A mainstay of the Seattle theatre community, Ferrante’s well-loved Caesar character has played more than 1200 performances and remains one of the most popular characters in the tent’s history.

The buck doesn’t stop with the talent on stage, Teatro ZinZanni bleeds mega talent behind the scenes as well. Swedish born Tobias Larsson is only one example, and he has returned to the tent to co-direct and choreograph The Hot Spot. An actor, singer, dancer, circus and cabaret performer, choreographer and director, Larsson made his international debut at Lido de Paris and toured Europe with several shows including performances with Tina Turner and Olivia Newton-John. He counts among his conquests (and favorite performances) Moulin Rouge in Paris, Sweet Charity, West Side Story, Three Penny Opera, and the lead in Sondheim’s Company. Most recently he co-directed Hail Caesar: Forbidden Oasis at Teatro ZinZanni in 2013, and since his work was last seen at the tent, he has been reunited with the legendary Tommy Tune in New York City where they’re currently developing a new production for Broadway.

For complete casting details, please visit us here.

The live band for The Hot Spot includes Hans Teuber (musical director, woodwinds, bass, and everything else); Jose Martinez (drums); Steve Moore (trombone, keyboards); Tom Kellock (piano); David Peterson (guitar).

The Hot Spot plays February 5-7 (press night February 19) at Teatro ZinZanni (222 Mercer Street, Seattle, WA 98101). Ticket prices start at $ 99 and can be purchased online at ZinZanni.com/Seattle, by phone (206) 802-0015, or in-person at the Teatro ZinZanni Box Office (open Tuesday-Sunday, Noon-7:00 p.m.).
