Summer Workouts: Exercise & Heat

The summer is barreling down upon us and we’re going to have to be smart if we want to avoid being scorched to a cinder as we seek our exercise fix. Where before we could simply head out for a late morning jog with impunity, now we have to worry about rising temperatures and the dangers that come with hours spent in the rays of the sun. From skin cancer to sun stroke, strenuous activity becomes a concern when the heat rises, and for that reason you have to be strategic about your summer moves. In today’s article we’re going to take a look at the different ways you can still find a way to exercise while avoiding the worst of the brunt of summer.

A great way to start your summer activities and avoid becoming burnt is to simply begin your exercises earlier in the day. Where before you might have gone for long runs around ten in the morning, you can now opt for eight or earlier. This will help you avoid the worst of the heat, and the rising humidity that often accompanies the rays of the sun. However, this might prove difficult for some if their exercise routines are longer than an hour; if you plan to run for a couple of hours say in training for a marathon, then you need to either be sure that you are hydrating properly as the day gets warmer or get up even earlier to avoid the worst of the heat.

Another simple and effective way to deal with the heat of summer is to do what millions do as a matter of course, and take your exercise inside. Countless gyms exist across this great land offering every kind of physical activity for you to partake in, from treadmills to zumba classes, and this can allow you to exercise as much as you desire without facing the dangers of UV rays.

If however you have no choice but to exercise outside during the heated hours, then be sure to protect yourself adequately. This can range from using SPF sunblock of at least 45, to long sleeved shirts and track pants with adequate UV protection sewn into them. Be sure to use sunglasses to protect your eyes, and to hydrate adequately and often as you will sweat tremendously in the summer sun. If you take these precautions, be prepared for a good but tough work out!

Cityview Racquet Club Announces Schedule for Summer Weekly Social Series

Long Island City, NY (PRWEB) April 21, 2015

CityView Racquet Club is gearing up for its Summer Weekly Social Series to bring new and exciting activities to the club’s rooftop deck starting Memorial Day weekend. Member Services Director Ali Maher is coordinating the events, alongside the club’s Events Director, Ashley Howard, which will be similar to the Winter Weekly Social Series she began.

The Winter Weekly Social Series ran Tuesday through Friday every week starting in February 2015. Tuesday and Thursdays featured live music while on Wednesdays the club hosted trivia night; Friday is Members’ Living Room night, which is where members can host personal gatherings with friends and family in the lounge, putting their own footprint on the theme and menu of the evening.

Maher started the series because she felt that the sky lounge wasn’t being used to its full potential. Although the lounge provides an excellent space for all types of events, most members were visiting the racquet and tennis club for other purposes.

“I felt the lounge was underutilized,” Maher says. “Many people have a certain mentality of coming into the club just to use the workout facilities or spa, so we’re trying to emphasize other unique aspects at CityView Racquet Club, such as the cozy environment of the lounge.”

For the Summer Weekly Social Series, things will switch up as the weather gets warmer.

Maher says that the Living Room Series will continue on Fridays this summer, so guests can continue using the lounge for private parties. The Living Room Series is vital, she says, so members can invite non-members to the club to check out the space and maybe consider applying for membership.

The schedule for the rest of the week will change, however, to give club members some new activities to look forward to. Tuesday nights will offer sunset yoga, and Wednesdays will be barbecue themed gatherings.

But Maher is most excited about the improv comedy nights featuring players from Magnet Theater and The Ex Comedy.

In fact, Maher’s own background is in comedy and acting. A native of Westchester, NY, Maher spent her youth at country clubs; and after attending SUNY Fredonia for PR/Legal Studies, she headed to Manhattan to pursue a career in the arts.

Maher studied and performed at The Upright Citizens Brigade, People’s Improv Theater and Magnet Theater, and she says she had the opportunity to work with some of the best in the business. However, she switched careers and headed into the private event business, where she soon realized that CityView Racquet Club was the perfect fit for her.

However, all of the events planned for the summer are part of Maher’s goal: to create the social environment she believes members of CityView Racquet Club will enjoy. Where members might meet others at bars or exercise classes, they can now make connections and bring friends and family to the events at their favorite tennis club.

“It’s been a pleasure being able to merge the fun, exciting, spontaneous personality from the comedy world to an elite private racquet club,” Maher says. “This place is very special to all the members and evokes a strong sense of community that we want to continue to stress.”

The Summer Weekly Social Series is expected to be a hit, according to Maher, as the winter events have all produced nothing but positive feedback from members. She credits the club’s social atmosphere with setting the company apart from its competitors.

“In improv you are trained to receive information, accept it, and then add onto it, propelling the scene forward constantly. It’s a formula that helps produce results. I believe what makes this club different is we also live by this formula. We don’t stop offering a variety of options to give our members,” Maher says. “‘Yes’ is never enough when it comes to questioning whether or not we’ve done enough for them; it should always be a ‘Yes, and…,’ what else can we do to enhance the experience? How do we stay one step ahead of the member and anticipate their needs before they are even vocalized. It is this quality that makes CityView Racquet Club one of a kind.”

The company helps thousands of individuals across the country lose weight and live happier, healthier lives. Tip #1 – Don’t do it Alone

The hardest part about committing to gym memberships is saying motivated and on track. Attempting to overcome these challenges alone is often extremely difficult.

The best way for anyone to stay motivated and inspired is exercising with friends who hold each other accountable and professionals who can teach and encourage.

Fit Body Boot Camp overcomes this obstacle with its class format and personal trainers. These two elements allow bootcampers to stay accountable by exercising with friends and stay motivated with the instruction of professional trainers.

Tip #2 – Can’t Out-Train a Bad Diet

Exercise alone cannot bring real results without proper nutrition and diet. But most gyms or fitness centers offer come kind of nutritional guidance for clients seeking such assistance.

All Fit Body Boot Camp training packages offer nutritional consultations and advice at no additional charge. Getting this sort of help is the best way to learn healthy habits and ensure weight loss results.

Tip #3 – Mix it Up Every Day

Try mixing things up and using all the resources a gym has to offer. Fit Body Boot Camp does this by planning completely new and unique workouts every single day. This allows bootcampers to target different areas of the body, avoid weight loss plateaus, and never get bored with Boot Camp.

Tip #4 – Don’t Waste Time

On the simplest level most people quit going to the gym simply because they can’t stand being there. It’s not an enjoyable atmosphere for many but there’s an easy response to this situation: spend less time at the gym.

Many believe they must spend hours at the gym every day in order to see results when, in reality, a 30-minute workout is plenty of time to get in shape and drop pounds— as long as it’s the right kind of workout, that is.

Fit Body Boot Camp workouts are only 30 minutes long yet because of their intensity and because of the Afterburn effect, Fit Body Boot Camp workouts burn hundreds of extra calories during and after a workout.

What many first time gymgoers don’t realize is that the world of fitness contains a plethora of options for getting in shape and losing weight. An ordinary big box gym membership simply isn’t right for most people.

The best way to avoid quitting the gym is choosing the right fitness option in the first place. When someone starts with the option that’s best for them their less likely to get discouraged, lose motivation, or get burned out.

Back Acne: Tips for Clearer Summer Skin

Albertson, NY (PRWEB) June 03, 2015

Acne is the same wherever it appears. But acne on the back (“bacne”) can be particularly stubborn to eliminate and hard to prevent. As with acne on the face, back acne is most common in teens and young adults, in the years when the sebaceous glands are most active. “The sebaceous glands produce sebum, or oil,” says Jayme Bashian, director and lead medical aesthetician of Simply Posh Aesthetic Spa. “The characteristic pimples, blackheads and cysts of acne are caused by oil and dead skin clogging the pores and attracting bacteria that can cause an infection. Back acne is more difficult to treat and prevent than facial acne because the pores on the back are larger and become clogged more easily. It is also harder to keep the skin free of irritating fabrics and, especially in the summertime, long hair.”

“Back acne is a source of considerable embarrassment and self-consciousness, especially among young people,” says Ms. Bashian. “We can provide immediate relief with TheraClearTM, an FDA-approved acne treatment that combines a gentle vacuum with a painless broadband light. TheraClear treatments work on all skin types, on mild to moderate inflammatory acne, and on pustular acne. There is little to no downtime and patients can resume activities immediately.”

Ms. Bashian provide their top tips for treating and preventing breakouts of mild to moderate back acne. More severe cases may require the care of a dermatologist.

Tips for Clearing and Preventing Back Acne

Keep your back clean: Poor hygiene won’t cause back acne but good hygiene will help prevent it and clear blemishes. Shower daily and especially right after exercise or any activity that generates perspiration. But don’t overdo it: Don’t clean the skin more than twice a day, don’t scrub hard, don’t use very hot water, and don’t use harsh anti-bacterial soaps. Shower or bathe in warm water, using a gentle body wash or cleanser that is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores; look for one with acne-fighting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Exfoliate – gently – to remove pore-clogging dead skin cells no more than twice a week using a soft sponge and a mild scrub.
Keep clean fabric next to the skin: Always change into clean underwear and clothes before and after exercising, and put a clean towel on exercise machines and mats at the gym. Exercise increases circulation and generates heat, which causes increased production of sebum, and perspiration and bacteria will aggravate acne. Avoid synthetic fabrics; choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothes that allow the skin to breathe and perspiration to evaporate. Change bed linens twice a week to keep sloughed-off skin cells and oil away from your back.
Avoid excessive sun exposure: Contrary to popular wisdom, the sun will not dry pimples or clear up acne. In fact, the sun damages cells and weakens the skin, making it more vulnerable to blemishes. And while perspiration cools the body and cleanses the skin of dirt, dead cells and excess oil, if those materials are left on the skin as perspiration dries, they will clog the pores and cause breakouts. Use facial sunscreen, which is formulated to avoid clogging pores, on any part of the body that is prone to breakouts; sunscreens intended for the body lack that protection.
Keep wet hair off your back: Conditioner and hair-styling products left on the hair are a frequent cause of blemishes on the back. After shampooing and conditioning in the shower, pull long hair forward and wash your back last to keep the residue of hair products off your back. Similarly, don’t leave wet hair on your back after swimming. Don’t use on your body a towel that has been used on your hair.
What about diet? Many people believe that certain foods – most notably, chocolates and fatty or oily foods – cause or exacerbate breakouts. While there is no scientific evidence that this is the case, Ms. Bashian suggests that you avoid any food that you think makes your acne worse. “A healthy, well-balanced diet is as good for your skin as it is for your overall well-being,” she says. “You shouldn’t have to make major changes to your diet to clear up acne.”

“Back acne is troublesome, especially at this time of year,” says Ms.Bashian. “But there are many effective treatments that, along with good personal habits, can eliminate or reduce its occurrence. Everyone can enjoy the skin-baring joys of summer!”

Shape-Up for Summer with Water Wellness

London (PRWEB UK) 26 March 2015

We’ve made it through the winter and the days are gradually getting lighter and warmer, which can mean only one thing – summer is on its way! It’s, therefore, the perfect time to spruce up and improve your general fitness by taking up some form of regular exercise, and what better way to get fit than having a splash around in the water!

The latest government guidelines recommend, to stay healthy, adults aged 19-64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate physical activity every week. A rule of thumb is that 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity is about the same as 2 minutes of moderate-intensity activity. Worryingly, only a fraction of the population manages even that.

Swimming is in the top ten popular types of exercise, after walking and running in the UK. There’s probably a pool near your home or workplace or better still if you have the space and budget you could consider some form of pool or hot tub at home.

One of the biggest health benefits of swimming is that it’s non-weight bearing, which means you won’t be putting any strain on muscles and joints. Swimming exercises the whole body and is an excellent way to tone up and get trim. Doing a few lengths involves most of the muscle groups. If you increase the pace, you’ll get an aerobic workout too. Swimming can also help you lose weight if you swim at a steady and continuous pace throughout the session. You could also join a swimming club or sign up for pool workout sessions, such as aqua aerobics. Not only does swimming help you lose weight and tone up, but it can also improve balance, increase flexibility, and help relieve stress and tension.

If you prefer a gentler for form of water wellness, a hot tub can offer some incredible hydrotherapy benefits. The warm water and bubbles will reduce the gravitational pull of your body, dilating the blood vessels which means less pressure on your heart, helping you cope with stress and anxiety and giving your body and mind time to relax. The temperature of the water will also induce perspiration which will help your body get rid of impurities and any water retention, which is an excellent way to detox your body and help those people who wish to lose weight or are struggling with cellulite. The experience of using a Hot Tub will release the body’s natural feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which will make a person feel happy and relaxed – another factor that will help those suffering from anxiety or depression.

The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) and the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) have joined force to promote the health benefits that water wellness can bring. BISHTA has begun with a ‘Happiness is a Hot Tub’ Campaign, which launches in April. It all starts with a photo competition where people are invited to share their Hot Tub Selfie photos for a chance to win a prize and their winning image to front the campaign. Entries to the competition will be shared on the BISHTA website ( and Facebook page (/PoolsHotTubs) with the hashtag #Happinessisahottub.
