How to Start and Stay With an Exercise Program For Life

You know all the stories, all the warnings, all the dire afflictions to your body, your health, your quality of life, and eventually, your early mortality coming to you soon or eventually, unless: you eat healthy, get enough sleep, give up smoking, and especially, exercise, exercise, exercise.

The chances of morbid obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, including stroke and heart attack have all been shown in countless studies to be reduced or eliminated through exercise. And you know that also. But it seems so hard, and it hurts, and you have perhaps tried, didn’t see any changes, or feel any better, and just quit. Or maybe you wanted to do something to improve your body, but you like good food and pleasant drinking and hanging out, way too much to trade it in for the hard work and time taken for regular exercise.

But truly putting things in perspective, you need to hear the words of Joanne Woodward, excellent actress herself, but better known as the late Paul Newman’s wife. In a question posed by the TV interviewer about her movie of a female marathoner and in real life, a committed runner: “How can one of your favorite foods be pasta and sauce when you are a runner, doesn’t that cancel out your exercise?”, Ms. Woodward replied: “you have it all backwards, I run precisely so that I’m able to partake of pasta and sauce and all those other wonderful foods”. So exercise not only saves your life, but vastly improves the quality of it.

Almost every expert will tell you to start by walking outdoors. Moving at all, of course, is a plus, but we would recommend a gym membership where you can still walk but in air temperature comfort, while at the same time having a machine to ratchet up the speed as in a treadmill which, in turn increases your heart rate. Your improvement in cardiovascular endurance will be enhanced by moving just a tad faster each day, which does not happen in an ordinary stroll. When you get to the point that the speed requires running, ditch the treadmill for an elliptical machine, because you’ll get the same aerobic benefit without the knee pounding resulting from lifting the feet. Even better, check out the elliptical machines before you decide on a gym, and see if they feature the new ones such as “Sports Art” that allow you to ratchet up the degree of difficulty to achieve not only the endurance needed to increase your lung capacity (aerobic exercise), but also to add muscle (anaerobic exercise) to your lower body.

That last point about anaerobic activity to improve muscle size and flexibility is an essential part of your exercise whether you’re overweight by a little or a lot, and a key element in weight control. You see, muscle burns calories much faster than fat does, even when you’re completely at rest. So it’s exercise, especially aerobic to take weight off, and resistance training to add muscle so that your muscle mass will keep the calories burning and therefore continue to keep weight off, even when you’re not exercising! So, let your gym people introduce you to the resistance machine circuit that you can begin with, and in many cases, have you instructed in each machine use, either at no or at a small fee.

Armed with this knowledge, and somewhat motivated, let’s face the most difficult part of starting in a gym with all those in-shape people when you feel you are so out of shape. As they say in New York City, “fugedaboutit”! Nobody that goes to a gym that I know of, in countless cities that I have been in, will be treating you badly, or staring, or even thinking about putting you down in any way. At the most, if you are overweight, they’re only going to think that you are where you’re supposed to be, and even perhaps, “God bless you for taking it on” and silently praise your courage, because so many of them started as you have.

So lets get started and remember what someone, I forget who, said about our bodies: “Our body is the baggage that we carry around all our life, keep it light and strong”.

Career Key Career Assessment Chosen for Strong Start Orientation Course at Bishop State Community College

Portland, OR (PRWEB) April 30, 2015

The Career Key,, and its valid career assessment have just been chosen for inclusion in Bishop State Community College’s mandatory Strong Start Orientation Course, given to all first-year students in the Fall of 2015. The college is located in Mobile, Alabama and serves nearly 4,000 students.

The Strong Start – First Time Student Orientation Course is a key strategic initiative that enhances student learning by addressing important student needs, including those in career planning. The Course’s primary focus is on helping first year students develop skills and abilities leading to academic persistence at Bishop State.

The Career Key assessment helps students learn about themselves and apply that knowledge to choosing a motivating course of study – leading to greater persistence or “sticking with” a program choice. The assessment is based on the respected Holland’s Theory of Career Choice, measuring students’ strongest personality types and interests. Career Key then matches them to careers, programs of study, and career pathways. Research shows this close personality-program-career match leads to greater persistence in a major or program, higher grades, more on-time graduation, and higher long-term job satisfaction.

Career Key displays all of Bishop State Community College’s programs on its website so that students can at any time match their personality and interests to the programs that best fit them.

Career Key Vice President, Juliet Wehr Jones, GCDF, says, “We’re so pleased that such a forward-looking, proactive institution has chosen The Career Key to help their students choose programs and careers in which they will be more likely to persist, learn, and succeed.

The Course is part of the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), “a five year action and implementation plan designed to enhance student learning and further strengthen Bishop State’s educational mission.” In designing it, Bishop State faculty and administrators made it a priority to identify research-based best practices on student learning and success, like those on which The Career Key is based. The QEP is also required for accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

For more information on the Course, visit the Bishop State Community College home page and click on “QEP.”

Diet Doc Announces Calorie Loading Diet Plans that Help Patients get a Head Start on New Years Weight Loss Resolutions

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 23, 2014

Although it may sound unbelievable, the holidays is the perfect time to launch Diet Doc’s calorie loading diet plans because it allows patients to load up on all of their favorite holiday dishes and jump start their New Year’s weight loss resolutions without anxiety or weight gain worry. Patients are actually encouraged to load up on excess calories to reset the metabolism and prepare the body for ketosis, which will begin during Phase II of the calorie loading diet plans.

Diet Doc combined scientific research from the 80s, when it was discovered that short periods of high fat, high carbohydrate consumption increased the body’s metabolism and fat oxidation, with their modern medical understanding. And, because Diet Doc is dedicated to bringing the safest and most effective method of weight loss to everyone, they partnered with Telemedicine, enabling patients in even the most remote regions of the country to choose the best health care and weight loss doctors in the nation and accelerate their New Year’s weight loss resolutions without leaving the comfort of their own home.

New patients will complete a health questionnaire and schedule an initial online consult with a Diet Doc physician who will review medical history to ensure that their calorie loading diet plans are the best weight loss method based on each patient’s personal lifestyle, nutritional needs and medical conditions. Next, patients are encouraged to load up on their favorite holiday dishes which boosts the metabolism and prepares the body to begin burning this extra fat. While all patients will qualify for meal and snack plans that are tailored to their specific needs, many will be eligible to accelerate fat loss with Diet Doc’s prescription hormone treatments, diet pills and appetite suppressants. These diet products not only promote fast weight loss, but they help patients over the initial weight loss hurdles by suppressing the appetite, and eliminating hunger, cravings and loss of energy during dieting.

Diet Doc’s calorie loading diet plans include unlimited personal attention and support from the entire staff, including certified nutritionists who work closely with each patient to design meal and snack plans. This one-on-one attention enables patients to begin to understand how the body reacts to specific foods and teaches them what food choices will keep their body operating optimally during dieting without compromising weight loss results.

The professional and dedicated staff helps patients learn how to kick bad eating habits and begin incorporating nutrient-rich, low calorie foods into their menu. Because carbohydrate consumption is streamlined, the body naturally forces fat that has become dangerously and comfortably nestled in the hard to reach areas into the bloodstream and quickly flushed from the system. Patients quickly begin noticing the loss of pounds and inches in these difficult to lose areas.

Diet Doc monitors each patient’s weight loss progress, attitude and comfort level with scheduled weekly checkup calls. This level of personal service cannot be duplicated by the competition and enables the doctors to quickly modify the calorie loading diet plans should weight loss taper.

Diet Doc has successfully guided thousands of patients toward improved emotional and physical health with their medically supervised calorie loading diet plans and urges those of all shapes and sizes, and in any part of the country, to call today to learn how to get a head start on their New Year’s weight loss resolutions.
