Conserve Water and Still Have a Beautiful Garden and Landscape This Season

Too much or not enough water and never when it’s needed. That seems to be the long time plight of gardeners. Add to this extended droughts, flooding and watering bans. What is a gardener to do? Consider becoming a waterwise gardener, says gardening expert and author Melinda Myers.

“Waterwise is not just about growing drought tolerant plants or eliminating plantings,” says Myers. “It’s a holistic approach to managing water in order to avoid flooding that overwhelms sewer systems, improper watering that wastes water and poor landscape designs that generate too much work and require too many resources.”

According to Myers, gardeners can incorporate a few waterwise habits into their gardening routine which is good for the garden, pocketbook and environment. She suggests starting with one or more of these strategies this year.

Select the right plant for the growing conditions. Plants that thrive in normal growing conditions will be healthier, require less care and need less water. Look for drought tolerant plants that require less water once established.
Keep water out of storm sewers and in the garden instead. Prevent flooding, while improving the garden. Adding several inches of compost to the top 8 to 12 inches of soil increases the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water. This means less runoff into the storm sewers and less frequent watering.
Use plants to prevent runoff and conserve water. Plant trees, shrubs, and groundcovers to slow the flow of rainwater, increase the amount of water that stays in the landscape for the plants, and to filter water before it enters the groundwater. Install one or more rain gardens to intercept surface water runoff for use by rain garden plants and to help recharge the groundwater.
Provide plants with a healthy diet. Use a slow release non-leaching organic nitrogen fertilizer like Milorganite. It encourages slow steady growth, so plants will require less water and be less prone to insect and disease problems. Plus, the slow release nitrogen encourages healthy growth and does not prevent flowering and fruiting.
Water wisely. Water plants thoroughly and only when needed. Water the soil, not the plant, using a watering wand, drip irrigation or a soaker hose, so less water is lost to evaporation. Water early in the morning whenever possible to reduce water loss during the heat of the day and diseases caused by wet foliage at night.
Manage lawns to reduce water use. Select drought tolerant grass varieties to reduce watering needs. Prepare the soil before seeding or sodding or aerate and spread a thin layer of compost over existing lawns to increase water absorption and reduce runoff. Mow high to encourage deep roots that are more drought tolerant and pest resistant. Allow lawns to go dormant during hot dry weather. If irrigating, water thoroughly when needed, that’s when footprints remain in the lawn.
Conserve water and reduce time and money spent on plant care. Mulch the soil around trees, shrubs and other plants with several inches of woodchips, shredded leaves, evergreen needles or other organic material. Mulching reduces watering frequency, prevents soil compaction from heavy rainfall thus increasing water absorption. It also adds organic matter to the soil as it decomposes.
Repair leaking faucets, fittings and garden hoses. A slow leak of one drip per second can waste up to nine gallons of water per day.
Look for and use wasted water. Collect the “warming water” typically wasted when preparing baths and showers. Use a five-gallon bucket to collect this fresh water and use it for gardens and container gardens. Collect water from dehumidifiers and window air conditioners for use on flowering plants. Do not, however, use this water if environmentally harmful solvents have been used to clean this equipment.
Check with the local municipality, if considering the use of gray water. Once it’s used for washing clothes, dishes or people, water is classed as “gray water” and most municipalities have guidelines or regulations related to its use.
Harvest rainwater if the local municipality allows it. The ancient technique of capturing rainwater in jugs, barrels and cisterns has made a comeback. Collecting rain when it is plentiful and storing it until it is needed is one way to manage water for the landscape. But first check local regulations before installing a rain harvesting system. Several states have banned rain harvesting, while others offer rebates or rain barrels at a discount to gardeners.

    Set a holiday goal: working toward and achieving a mini-goal will help you stay focused. Make it specific and realistic for the season— something that fits into the big picture of your long-term goals. It’ll set you up to succeed.

    Be the change: get rid of as many temptations as you can. Change the way you and others celebrate. Bring and serve healthy holiday food. Stay positive and inspire others to stay on track and you’ll end up motivating yourself.

    Start new traditions: traditional holiday fun doesn’t always fit with new healthy lifestyles. Try a recipe rehab on a family favorite, use smaller plates or arrange a family physical activity. One small change can make a big difference.

    Sleep to success: more sleep renews willpower and helps you make better food choices during the day. Set a bedtime 30 minutes earlier than normal, turn off the electronics and wake up recharged and refreshed.

    Set a holiday take action weight: setting a weight four to five pounds above normal gives you a little leeway but won’t let weight gain get out of control. Weigh yourself every morning. If you hit that high weight it’s time to cut back.

    Design a holiday cocktail: avoid the empty calories in alcohol. Create your own special drink for the season. Choose less alcohol or go completely alcohol-free with a “mocktail”. Use seltzer, Splenda and low calorie mixers.

    Make yourself move: keeping your activity level high will help keep all your other healthy behaviors in place. Don’t use “too busy” as an excuse. Schedule exercise into your day and make it your top priority.

    Go in with a game plan: deciding how you will enjoy the gathering ahead of time will help you take control of bad holiday behaviors. Eat ahead of time. Bring a healthy dish. Stand away from the food table. Choose to control the situation.

    Show gratitude and count your blessings: gratitude is key to a healthy mindset. Count your blessings daily and practice ways to celebrate them without food. The more you do it, the easier it becomes and the more you succeed.

KAMUT® Brand Khorasan Wheat Butternut Squash Galette

Ingredients:

Butternut Squash Layer

½ cup butter

½ cup packed brown sugar

½ tsp salt

¾ tsp nutmeg

1 4 lb. butternut squash – use the top part without the seeds, peel, halve and cut ¼” slices

Pastry

1 cup KAMUT® Wheat flour

½ cup all purpose flour

6 Tbs butter

1 Tbs sugar

Gingersnap Layer

2/3 cup KAMUT® wheat rolled flakes

½ cup KAMUT® wheat flour

½ cup sugar

1 tsp ginger

½ tsp cinnamon

12 tsp nutmeg

3 Tbs maple syrup

Preparation:

Pastry:

    Combine all the ingredients and pulse in a food processor until all the ingredients are mixed and resemble breadcrumbs
    Slowly add ice water and combine by hand until a dough is formed. Press into a ball and then flatten to an 8” disc. Wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour.
    Take a sheet of parchment at least 15” x 20”, dust with flour and roll out the dough to a 15” circle. Don’t worry if the edges are uneven.
    Heat the oven to 400 degrees.

Gingersnap Layer:

    Combine all the ingredients in a bowl until well mixed.
    Put onto the rolled pastry dough leaving a 2” border.

Butternut Squash Layer:

    In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, add sugar, salt and nutmeg and cook until combined and bubbly – stir frequently
    Add the squash and cook for 5-8 minutes until tender.
    Remove with tongs and arrange in overlapping circles on top of the gingersnap later and drizzle with the remaining syrup.
    Use the parchment to lift the edges of the pastry and loosely fold over the filling.
    Use the parchment to lift onto a baking sheet and trim the edges close to the galette.
    Bake for 40-45 minutes until the edges of the galette are lightly brown.
    Let cool for 15 minutes on the baking sheet. Lift the parchment and slide galette onto a serving platter.
    Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

KAMUT® Brand Khorasan Wheat Carrot Cake Cookies.

(Makes around 25 cookies)

Ingredients:

¾ cup butter

1¼ cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 egg

1½ tsp vanilla

1/3 cup organic milk

1 cup oat bran

2 cup KAMUT® wheat rolled flakes

1 cup KAMUT® wheat flour

1½ cup shredded carrots

½ cup golden raisins

½ cup baking soda

1tsp salt

1tsp cinnamon

½tsp nutmeg

½tsp ginger

Cream Cheese Frosting (Optional)

8oz cream cheese softened

3Tbs butter softened

16oz confectioners sugar

1tsp vanilla

Preparation:

    Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
    Beat together the butter, brown sugar, egg, vanilla and milk. Add all the remaining ingredients and mix until just blended. Grease a baking sheet and drop rounded tablespoons of the cookie dough in the sheet.
    Bake for 10-12 minutes.
    Beat together the ingredients for the frosting and when cookies have cooled pipe some frosting onto each cookie.
