USO to Make a Million Moments in May: Military Appreciation Month

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) May 01, 2015

The USO makes 30,000 moments every day for our nation’s troops and their families worldwide, striving to be always by their side from the moment they join the service, throughout their military journey and as they transition back into their civilian communities. In honor of National Military Appreciation Month, the USO is rallying Americans to help make “A Million Moments in May” as part of the USO’s national Every Moment Counts campaign. The month-long celebration will include hundreds of activities and events at USO locations across the globe, including participation from an impressive lineup of celebrities, corporate and program partners. In addition, the USO is calling on Americans to get involved by visiting USOmoments.org to find out how to make and share #USOmoments and pledge their support for our troops and their families.

“The Every Moment Counts campaign has been widely embraced by our USO centers, donors, corporate partners and entertainers since its launch in 2013,” said Alan Reyes, USO Senior Vice President of Operations. “It serves as an important gateway to engage troops, the general public and our partners on behalf of our mission. We look forward to making a million moments this May and every month for our troops and families who sacrifice so much.”

The USO and Sesame Street will also be making moments for military kids and will debut a brand new 30-minute character performance centered on military-to-civilian transition, while simultaneously running their ever popular hit “Katie is Moving to a New Base.” Their newest installment, “Katie’s Family Transitions to Civilian Life,” will feature new songs, choreography and messages of support. Both shows will run as part of the 2015 Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families, which is scheduled to perform more than 100 shows at 45 military bases in nine countries starting May 7.

In addition to the Muppets taking the stage this month, the USO and country music will be working together in celebration of the Grand Ole Opry’s 90th Anniversary. Cause for Applause, the Opry’s nine-month anniversary celebration of causes close to country music’s heart, has selected the USO and MusiCorps to “Salute the Troops” by creating special moments during shows, honoring troops, and raising funds in May. Hunter Hayes, USO tour veteran will take the stage on May 9 at the Opry, prior to his Italy USO tour later in the month. On May 19, the Opry will salute the troops during a special show including USO tour veterans Kellie Pickler, Trace Adkins, Craig Morgan, and more. The Opry’s promo code SALUTE will benefit the USO and MusiCorps throughout the month of May. Visit http://www.Opry.com/USO to learn more about this partnership.

For the women who serve and support our military, the USO will host two very special tailored events for females. The first is on May 16 for military moms-to-be, USO/What to Expect Presents: Special Delivery in Phoenix, AZ. In collaboration with best-selling author Heidi Murkoff, the USO will host a baby shower, play shower games and have a Q&A with Murkoff. Later in the month, the USO will bring Operation: That’s My Dress to servicewomen and military spouses in New York City during Fleet Week on May 24. This edition of Operation: That’s My Dress will offer free dresses for evening and formal occasions for the special events in their lives.

For our troops in transition and caregivers, the USO will also support the Navy’s fifth annual Wounded Warrior and Veteran Hiring and Support Conference in San Antonio, TX on May 19 and 20. As part of the two day experience, Texas area transitioning troops, veterans and their spouses will network with some of today’s top employers – employers with active positions to recruit and fill and who understand the value of hiring those who have served. With the help of state-of-the-art technology, powered by Futures Inc., the USO and the Department of the Navy are able to pre-match jobseekers and employers and connect qualified candidates with the companies and positions that best fit their military training. On May 27 and 28, the USO Caregiver Seminar at Fort Leonard Wood, MO will focus on giving back to those who provide comfort and care to wounded, ill and injured troops. Designed to provide a much-needed break for caregivers, the daylong seminar will connect caregivers with peers in their community, provide them with tips on managing the stresses of caring for their loved one, as well as focus on the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle and taking time to take care of themselves.

Taking the celebration to our nation’s capital, the USO will once again host its bi-annual Service Project event on Capitol Hill on May 20 to express America´s gratitude to those who currently serve. Enlisting the support from members of Congress, the USO will work to assemble 1,500 healthy snack packs for service members and their families. Generously donated by Harris Teeter, each pack will include such items as mixed nuts, oatmeal, dried fruit and low-fat popcorn, among other nutritional items. Once assembled, the packs will be distributed to the USO Warrior and Family Centers at Fort Belvoir and Naval Service Activity Bethesda – the home of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Closing out the month, The Coca-Cola Company will honor our military heroes at the 56th running of the legendary Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway during Memorial Day weekend. The event involves more than 10,000 troops the entire race weekend. Through Coca-Cola’s sponsorship, this will be the fifth straight year that the USO has helped select the Grand Marshal for the race and pay tribute to our troops. This year’s Grand Marshal is Dawn Seif, the wife of Marine Staff Sergeant, Andrew Seif, who was killed during a training exercise on March 10, 2015. Staff Sgt. Seif was a decorated Marine who was awarded the 2013 USO Marine of the Year and most recently the Silver Star.

Every Moment Counts is a national campaign to rally Americans to honor and create moments that matter for our troops and their families. By clearly communicating the significance of these moments, and humanizing their impact on families, the USO can help shift the civilian perspective on military service and inspire Americans to help show their gratitude to our troops and their families. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Invests $28 Million in New Research to Stop Multiple Sclerosis, Restore Function and End MS Forever

NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) April 08, 2015

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has committed $ 28 million to support an expected 84 new MS research projects and training awards. These are part of a comprehensive research strategy aimed at stopping MS, restoring function that has been lost, and ending the disease forever – for every single person with MS.

This financial commitment is the latest in the Society’s relentless research efforts to move us closer to a world free of MS, and part of a projected investment of over $ 52 million in 2015 alone to support 380 new and ongoing studies around the world. So that no opportunity is wasted, the Society pursues all promising paths, while focusing on priority areas including progressive MS, nervous system repair, gene/environmental risk factors and wellness and lifestyle.

Just a few of the new cutting-edge research projects include a University of California, San Francisco-led consortium focusing on a comprehensive analysis of the gut microbiome to develop probiotic strategies for stopping progressive MS; a pilot trial at Johns Hopkins University exploring the tolerability of a diet that intermittently restricts calorie intake as a treatment for disease activity in people with MS; pre-clinical studies by a commercial firm (Bionure) to test the potential of a compound to protect the nervous system and stimulate repair of nerve-insulating myelin; and a new collaborative center at Oregon Health & Science University to research patient-centered wellness programs to improve the daily life of people with MS.

“These innovative new projects add to the Society’s comprehensive efforts to stop MS, restore function and end MS forever,” notes Bruce Bebo, PhD, National MS Society’s Executive Vice President, Research. “While we fund more research than any other MS organization in the world, we also convene and empower the research community toward breakthroughs that can help people with MS live their best lives now.”

Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and the body. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. Worldwide, over 2.3 million people live with the unpredictable challenges of multiple sclerosis.

“MS research is a top National MS Society priority, with increasing annual investments to drive solutions for every person with MS,” says Cynthia Zagieboylo, President and CEO of the Society. “We fund the entire research spectrum, propelling novel ideas into the lab, translating breakthroughs into clinical trials, and moving success in clinical trials into new treatments for people living with MS.”

To find the best research with the most promise, the National MS Society relies on more than 130 world-class scientists who volunteer their time to carefully evaluate hundreds of proposals every year. This rigorous evaluation process assures that Society funds fuel research that delivers results in the shortest time possible.

There are FDA-approved therapies that can impact the underlying disease course in people with the more common forms of MS. However, none of these can stop progression or reverse the damage to restore function. National MS Society-funded research paved the way for existing therapies – none of which existed just several decades ago – and continues to be a driving force of MS research.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide.

About the National Multiple Sclerosis Society

The Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. To move us closer to creating a world free of MS, last year alone, the Society invested $ 50.2 million to support more than 380 new and ongoing research projects around the world while providing program services to over one million people. Takoma Park, Md. (PRWEB) January 22, 2015

Plans for a new Washington Adventist University (WAU) Health Professions, Science and Wellness Center in Takoma Park, Md. were advanced recently when health care executive and board member Bruce Boyer presented a $ 1 million check for the project at a meeting of the WAU Board of Trustees.

“This generous gift will go a long way toward making the vision for a new Health Professions, Science and Wellness Center a reality,” said WAU President Weymouth Spence, Ed.D., R.T. “The center will offer exciting and endless possibilities for this university as we find new ways to enhance the education of our students in the health and science professions, promote healthy living, and improve community wellness.”

Circuelle Foundation Reaches Over Half a Million Women with a New Beautiful Awareness Message to Support Healthy Rituals and Breast Awareness

Sarasota, Fla. (PRWEB) December 10, 2014

The Circuelle Foundation, launched in 2014 to educate and empower women to embrace healthy breast rituals, reached more than half a million women with their Beautiful Awareness™ message and new way to support breast self-exams.

Circuelle Foundation provided 57,068 women a breast ritual créme and a new way to view breast health. The non-profit organization appeared at various premier events including, the Oscars®, Wine Women & Shoes®, Brides Against Breast Cancer, Revlon 5K Walk, and Key to the Cure. The Circuelle Foundation reached out to the medical community as well at the National Consortium of Breast Centers in Las Vegas and provided a clinically proven breast ritual créme for participating breast centers to provide to their patients free of charge.

Women aged 18 to 29 years are still more likely to exercise, go to the dentist, weigh themselves and get their eyes tested than check their breasts. Since 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, it is important to reach this younger audience with the importance of breast awareness. The need to change the way women view their breast health is important considering 1 in 3 women think about their breast health ONLY when their doctor brings it up.

Circuelle Foundation launched a Beautiful Awareness campaign directed to young women via social media and email. The successful campaign launched over FaceBook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn and featured educational messages, infographics, testimonial videos, and inspirational and educational quotes. With 145,814 social media impressions and 300,000 emails sent, Circuelle Foundation is educating women with healthy breast rituals. Circuelle Foundation knows the importance of all screening methods to detect breast cancer and also provided free mammograms to the Conejo Clinic in California.

“We hope to help educate and bring awareness to women about breast health while empowering them to embrace healthy rituals,” said Melissa Kirkpatrick, founder of Circuelle Foundation.

“Our goals for 2015 include launching our school-centered education program to help educate high school and college students about the importance of breast awareness through breast education and healthy rituals. Kirkpatrick said, “The average cost to implement this program in a classroom is $ 125.00, and in an entire school, it’s $ 750.00. However, the impact breast health education can have to our society is truly priceless.”

Cubic Awarded $51 Million in Contract Orders to Support Home-Station Training for the U.S. Army

San Diego, Calif. (PRWEB) November 24, 2014

Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) announced today that it was awarded two new orders with a combined value at more than $ 51 million for its Tactical Vehicle System (TVS) and Instrumentable Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System Individual Weapon Systems (I-MILES IWS) from the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI). These solutions are instrumental to the quality of home-station training by providing significant improvements to training realism.

The orders come as part of a $ 4.3 billion Department of Defense reprogramming package presented to the U.S. Congress for critically needed defense equipment and services. This collaborative, bipartisan effort between the executive and legislative branches depicts our nation’s commitment towards national security readiness and the ultimate preparedness of our men and women who serve in our armed forces.

In a recent letter to Army Secretary, John McHugh, San Diego Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, expressed strong support for the reprogramming stating, “Cubic’s TVS and I-MILES solutions are crucial for warfighter training because they enable soldiers to rehearse combat skills and learn from their mistakes safely in a battlefield setting. These devices are used during live, force-on-force training events and provide the critical feedback for our forces to achieve and sustain mission readiness.”

I-MILES IWS uses laser emitters that attach to military weapons and on-body sensors to replicate combat and records data for later review. I-MILES TVS, the vehicular adaptation of Cubic’s man-worn Individual Weapons System (IWS), equips Army wheel vehicles and other tactical vehicles with lasers, sensors and electronics used during force-on-force combat training exercises. It employs Cubic’s wireless MILES technology to provide real-time casualty assessment necessary for MILES tactical engagement training in direct-fire instrumented training scenarios. It delivers superior performance because of its weapon simulation and casualty assessment accuracy for vehicles and fixed structures.

“Cubic is proud to provide I-MILES IWS and TVS training equipment and to support the U.S. Army’s relentless focus on training. We believe our systems play a critical role for the development and sustainment of our warfighters,” said Dave Schmitz, president of Cubic Defense Applications. “It is our goal to provide the most effective and affordable training solutions, and to do so by driving innovation into the areas most critical to our customers.”

9th Annual Tradition of Hope Gala Raises Close to $1 Million and Refuels Augies Quest Initiative to Cure ALS

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) October 27, 2014

Hundreds of business and civic leaders from Southern California helped “fill the tank” at this year’s race car themed Tradition of Hope gala by fundraising close to $ 1 million for Augie’s Quest to benefit ALS drug development taking place at the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS.net).

Held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and sponsored by Allied Lube/Jiffy Lube, RD Olson Development, Pritzker Family Foundation, College Works, Douglas Allred Company, Traditional Jewelers, Shell, and Dine Equity, the Tradition of Hope Gala pulled out all the stops as guests began the night with a walk down a red carpet donned with models in pit crew attire, followed by an evening of dinner, live entertainment from the a cappella group Filharmonic (from NBC’s The Sing Off), dancing, auction, and award ceremony honoring philanthropic leaders.

Special honorees for the night included Richard Paek, CEO of Allied Lube, who was honored with the Founders Award for his dedication to Augie’s Quest, his continued support of his local community, and efforts in the fight against ALS. José Cofiño, founder of BeyondALS.org and a person living with ALS, was presented with the Courage Award.

In addition, Anthony Carbajal was invited as a special guest of the night. His ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video went viral after he shared his personal account with the disease, making him a recognizable face within the ALS community.

“The gala topped off an incredible year for ALS awareness and support for research,” says Augie Nieto, founder of Augie’s Quest. “I am grateful to all those who are committed to our mission to find a cure for ALS and for their continued support of Augie’s Quest.”

About Augie’s Quest

The purpose of Augie’s Quest has always been to fund research and drug development aimed at ending ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Since 2007, Augie’s Quest has raised over $ 42 million in support of finding effective ALS treatments- making it the largest individual fundraising program for ALS!

All funds raised by Augie’s Quest benefit the ALS Therapy Development Institute ALS TDI, the world’s largest ALS-dedicated drug development organization. Support comes from a huge network of national events and promotions, including the BASH for Augie’s Quest, Tradition of Hope Gala and widely successful campaigns within the very generous fitness industry, such as the Clubs for the Quest, as well as a hugely innovative joint-fundraising initiative called the ClubCorp Charity Classic which benefits Augie’s Quest and other local charities chosen by that networks members directly.
