LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program Shows Significant Gains for Cancer Survivor Participants

CHICAGO, IL (PRWEB) May 28, 2015

Cancer survivors who participated in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program exhibited improvements in physical activity, fitness and quality of life, according to research conducted by Drs. Melinda Irwin of Yale Cancer Center and Jennifer Ligibel, MD, senior physician in the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers, Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The findings will be presented at this year’s American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The study, designed to assess the impact of the 12-week LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, included 186 participants and specifically evaluated quality of life, physical activity and fitness. Participants experienced significant increases in physical activity (75 percent exercising a minimum of 150 minutes/week vs. 25 percent for the control group); and improvements in both overall quality of life and fitness performance (according to a six-minute walk test). The participants had been diagnosed with stages I-IV of cancer, of which 50 percent had breast cancer. In addition, at the outset of the program, the majority of the participants had been inactive.

“We were so pleased to be able to show the improvement in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA’s participants after committing to this program of physical activity,” said Drs. Irwin and Ligibel. “We look forward to an opportunity to show longer term and wider effects – hoping to prove that the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program could provide a platform to increase physical activity in thousands more cancer survivors around the country.”

The study will be presented at ASCO as part of the Patient and Survivor Care session on June 1. The clinical trial information on the study is available at NCTO2112149.

“LIVESTRONG at the YMCA was created when patients told us that they needed a safe, supportive space to get into a fitness routine following treatment,” said Chandini Portteus, LIVESTRONG President and CEO. “Drs. Irwin and Ligibel’s research reinforces our belief that embarking on this program of semiweekly physical activity is keenly important to help cancer survivors be a part of an active and vital community. Along with our partners at the YMCA, we hope that these results will allow more survivors to take advantage of the program and regain their physical fitness.”

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week exercise program, offered at little to no cost, to help survivors improve their strength and physical fitness, diminish the severity of therapy side effects, develop supportive relationships and improve their quality of life. The program launched in 2007 as a partnership between the LIVESTRONG Foundation and YMCA of the USA and is available at more than 400 locations, having served more than 29,000 survivors to date.

“With a presence in 10,000 communities across the country, the Y is one of the few organizations with the ability to reach cancer survivors wherever they live,” said Matt Longjohn, National Health Officer, YMCA of the USA. “LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has helped thousands of people reclaim their health in a safe and supportive environment and this study further proves the program works.”

Cancer and Diet!

The foods that you consume directly impact how quickly your body will heal from cancer. In fact, diet and lifestyle are the main culprits when it comes to the development of cancer cells. Individuals who eat a diet filled with highly processed junk foods dramatically increase their chances of developing cancer. All junk foods contain chemicals that the body does not recognize, and the body deals with these chemicals by storing them as tumors.

Once tumors develop, you will not be able to get rid of them completely if you continue to put toxic substances into your body. Toxins not only enter your body through foods, they also enter through pharmaceutical use. All drugs are chemical based, which is why they have so many side effects. Increasing the amount of chemicals in your body is not the best approach for curing cancer. Cleansing your body is the best way to prepare it for healing and is one of the first steps you should take after receiving a diagnosis, which is why changing your diet is essential.

Because many physicians do not believe that cancer and diet go hand in hand, the majority of cancer patients are not advised to eliminate processed, chemical based foods from their diets. In fact, hospitals and other medical facilities that treat cancer patients typically serve them the exact foods that contributed to their illness. Doctors do not spend many hours studying nutrition while in medical school, which is why many of them are not aware of the natural ability that your body has to heal itself when it is nourished properly.

One of the main factors that impacts how your body will react to cancerous cells is the pH level of your body. The pH level of your body directly impacts how healthy it is. On the other hand, when your body is acidic, diseases such as cancer will not only survive, they will thrive. The best and easiest way to increase the pH level in your body is to improve your diet. The majority of fruits and vegetables have high pH levels, and by eating these fruits and vegetables in their natural, raw state, you can quickly start the process of increasing the alkalinity of your body.

Disease will not exist in a body that is alkaline, so keeping your body in an alkaline state is one of the most important steps that you can take to diminish the cancerous tumors in your body naturally. There are countless other steps that you can take as well.

Contrary to what medical professionals teach, it is possible to cure cancer naturally, but you must empower yourself with the proper knowledge. Visit http://www.howtohealcancer.info to watch a powerful video clip about healing cancer and to learn the truth about the cancer industry.

Facing the Realities of Cancer Head On

Madison, Wisconsin (PRWEB) April 17, 2015

Reviewer Craig Stephans highlights Dr. Jack Westman‘s four aims in his book The Cancer Solution: Taking Charge of Your Life with Cancer: 1) to give a broad overview of cancer treatment and research, 2) to provide technical and referential details about cancer specifics, 3) to stimulate interest in complementary cancer care and 4) to encourage readers to become fully informed advocates for funding to target preventing and treating the underlying causes of cancer. Dr. Westman intends the book to be both readable and an ongoing reference.

Dr. Westman writes as a medical professional and as a widower who lost his wife to a long-time battle with breast cancer. More recently two other close relatives were diagnosed with cancer; these recent diagnoses inspired him to author a book to make available his plethora of research into all aspects of cancer. He presents it in an accessible and helpful manner that is beneficial for readers from any background.

The book is especially relevant and helpful to those dealing with cancer as a victim, caregiver, helping professional, medical professional, researcher or policy maker. The information is enlightening, instructive, honest and realistic. The author’s research is vast and deep in all of these areas. As the author himself suggests, some areas of the book apply to some readers and not to others or are for reference and can be skimmed initially and referred to later.

For the average reader, the chapters on cancer prevention and complementary solutions will be most interesting. The natural solutions of diet, exercise and lifestyle provide clarion calls for any person to respond to immediately to reduce the risk of cancer. Additionally, Westman highlights the treatment methods and outcomes for cancer patients. He looks at the underlying causes of cancer in the behavior of the body and normal cells. There is much we can do in the areas of prevention and treatment that is simply overlooked for various reasons that Dr. Westman cites.

Dr. Westman’s tone is compassionate and helpful throughout the book. His motive is clearly concern and urgency that we do all we can to overcome cancer and that we do it intelligently and altruistically. Because cancer has an impact on all of us in some way, this book will benefit everyone.

Cancer, Caregivers, and Comedy: Two Chicago Women Bring Their Story of Survival to New York

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 12, 2015

BeeFAB Productions, a Chicago-based theater company, is bringing its new show, “Tales of a Stage 4 Cancer,” to Chelsea’s Magnet Theater for its New York debut on Monday, May 4, 2015.

Written and performed by Judy Fabjance and Kelly Beeman, “Tales” is a collection of satire, comedy, and touching stories about the brutal strength of newlyweds facing the daily grim realities of The Big C – softened by the humor of the unexpected bittersweet revelations.

“Anyone who has been affected by cancer in any way will relate to this show,” says Fabjance. “We’ve had doctors and nurses come to our show and tell us that they now have a better understanding of what their patients go through.”

When Fabjance produced her first one-woman show, “Are You There, Judy? It’s me, Cancer” in 2011, she was already a three-year survivor after a right mastectomy. Last year she married Beeman, who became her primary caretaker.

Beeman calls “Tales” a love story. “So many people feel like they are trapped in this depressing, scary story. We want to help them find the humor, find the lighter side; find the release.”

Through sketches, songs, and monologues, Beeman and Fabjance tackle everything from restrictive diets to their sex life to the questionable motives of cancer’s so-called “Big Pink” industry.

Their satirical perspective is rooted in their training at the Chicago’s Second City Conservatory, where Fabiance has been an instructor since 1999, where she worked and studied with Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, and many other comedic luminaries who have supported Fabjance through every step of her arduous journey. Colbert even provided an autographed book for a silent auction as a fundraiser for the cause, listing the book’s actual value as “priceless.”

Beeman writes and performs in training sketches for Lambda Legal, Personal Pac, and Motorola, where she also has a day job as a reliability engineer.

Personal Peptides Announces Precision Medicine Solution for Cancer Treatment

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) February 03, 2015

Personal Peptides, a provider of precision medicine based on genomic analysis, today announced the availability of a nutrigenomic tool for oncology: the ImmunoDiet™. The ImmunoDiet™ is a test that sequences the genome of individuals to provide oncologists and nutritionists with the information required to create a customized nutrition plan designed to improve the outcomes of cancer patients.

The ImmunoDiet™ is an example of the type of treatment referred to by President Obama in his recent announcement of a major biomedical research initiative that includes the collection of genetic data on one million Americans so scientists could develop drugs and treatments tailored to the characteristics of individual patients.

“Cancer patients should make positive lifestyle changes, that can include a better diet and more exercise. But those changes can be tailored with information in the genomes of their cancer cells,” said Jahan Khalili, Ph.D, Personal Peptides founder. “The ImmunoDiet test has delivered actionable information for every sample we’ve analyzed so far. We see cancers that mimic foods like spinach and pomegranate in addition to the most likely suspects, including cows and other mammals.”

Cancer can mutate to mimic certain proteins found in food, and consuming these foods has the potential to suppress the cancer specific immune system. Similarly, a strategy to avoid foods that may damage the cancer-specific immune system may help boost an ongoing immune system response against cancer. The challenge is that the DNA in each individual’s cancer is different. As a result, treatments must be customized for each person. Personal Peptides enables health and nutrition providers to counsel patients to manage their diets according to the individual DNA of their cancer with the aim of improving their outcomes.

About ImmunoDiet™

The ImmunoDiet™ is the only nutrigenomic cancer diet designed to prevent food-based suppression of cancer-specific immune response. Built to function like immunotherapy, this personalized food avoidance diet may prevent damage to cancer-specific T cells. The ImmunoDiet™ is offered as a one-of-a-kind tool for patients who desire to make safe food choices based on their individual cancer.

If oral tolerance is acting on the same T cells that are trying to fight a cancerous tumor, this may be stopped with the knowledge provided by the nutrigenomic ImmunoDiet™. Avoiding foods containing mutated molecular mimics, called M3 peptides, may help specifically boost one’s unique anti-cancer immune response.

The food to avoid when you have cancer is your tumor. When mice are fed the proteins from their tumor, the cancer in the body grows 25% faster, in less than three weeks. Because cancer can mutate to mimic some foods, this experiment describes a path to guide a food avoidance diet. Extending this experimental benefit to patients is the mission of Personal Peptides and the hope embodied in the ImmunoDiet™.

Testing the ImmunoDiet™

Testing the efficacy of the ImmunoDiet™ in humans is crucial, even though dietary interventions are especially challenging as they should coincide with treatments administered by oncologists. Personal Peptides is currently conducting tests to determine patient compliance with food avoidance recommendations. The results will allow us to move forward with a study to determine efficacy. The efficacy study will likely be conducted with cancer survivors who have achieved remission with an immunotherapy. We will be able to measure clinical end points in addition to physically track the T cells which cross react with the cancer and foods.

The first ImmunoDiet™ participant was a Ph.D. scientist who understood the T cell repertoire, the foundation of all efforts in the field of immunotherapy and how immune systems recognise “self” from “non-self”. The patient wanted to use an ImmunoDiet™ analysis on a suspicious mole removed a year prior. As moles can progress to melanoma and are sometimes excised as a precaution, this allowed the archived sample to be easily processed. For the doctor and the patient, the process is similar to requesting a second opinion.

When the sequencing of circulating DNA is more readily available, this testing can recommend food exclusions prior to diagnosis of frank cancer. This is how Dr. Khalili believes we can make the greatest impact in cancer.

Availability of the ImmunoDiet™

The ImmunoDiet™ is available through a client portal at http://www.immunodiet.com. Each patient must contact Personal Peptides to determine their eligibility. Personal Peptides provides the ImmunoDiet to patients who possess qualifying sequencing information. Those with solid cancers who do not already have their tumor sequenced may participate as well, though the delivery of the results will take four to six weeks longer to receive to allow for sequencing.

About Personal Peptides

Founded in Houston, Personal Peptides is the first company to develop a nutrigenomic tool for cancer patients, designed to improve their cancer specific immune system. By bridging the gap between the human immune system and personal genomics, Personal Peptides aims to provide individuals with the tools to sculpt their own immune repertoires.

Bridgetown Physical Therapy Begins New Rehabilitation Program for Cancer Survivors This December

Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) December 09, 2014

As of Dec. 1, Bridgetown Physical Therapy and Training Studio now offers cancer survivors a rehabilitation program for overcoming the physical barriers resulting from cancer treatment. Lead by Doctor Mark Hatfield, PT, DPT, the program helps survivors transition into a long term recovery and return to normal life activities.

As musculoskeletal experts, physical therapists are trained to identify dysfunction in the body and restore movement. Cancer survivors have unique physiological changes following cancer treatment that affects physical activity and movement. At Bridgetown Physical Therapy and Training Studio each client receives an individual plan of care with respect to their cancer treatment and medications. The program includes evidence-based exercises specifically for cancer survivors during and following cancer treatment. Additionally, it designs a long term home exercise plan.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) have developed physical activity guidelines for cancer survivors as a result from a growing body of research that shows multiple benefits of exercise. These benefits include improvements in survival rates, physical function, aerobic capacity, strength, flexibility, quality of life, and less fatigue. There is also consistent evidence that exercise is safe during and after cancer treatment.

“I believe our clinic is a perfect platform for this population,” said co-owner Mark Hatfield. “It provides specialized medical care in a clean and enjoyable private gym environment.”

About Bridgetown Physical Therapy and Training Studio

Bridgetown Physical Therapy and Training Studio is an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic in Southwest downtown Portland. They treat a wide range of injuries and body parts. The physical therapists also offer personal training to previous patients and the general public. They are on most insurance panels for reimbursement of physical therapy care. Additionally, they validate parking for their patients, which makes commuting to downtown easy and without stress.
