Brookhaven Retreat Celebrates National Walking Day on April 1, 2015

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) April 01, 2015

Brookhaven Retreat will kick off National Stress Awareness month by hosting an in-house event on National Walking Day for clients and staff members. The event will include a mindful walk on the nature trails, a letting-go ceremony and a plant-based vegetarian luncheon. Clients will release balloons into the sky to symbolize their fears and obstacles that no longer serve them.

Throughout the month of April, staff members Charity Coyle, RD (Registered Dietician) and Stephanie Christian, LMBT (Licensed Bodywork Therapist) will facilitate activities, including therapeutic massage and stretching for fellow staff members.

Jacqueline Dawes, founder of Brookhaven Retreat, considers exercise an essential aspect of recovery and overall wellness. That explains why physical activity is an inherent part of The Lily Program® at Brookhaven Retreat.

An inactive lifestyle is both a symptom and a contributor of mental health issues. Depression and anxiety can keep women in bed for long periods of time, which means self-care and physical needs are neglected.

Thirty minutes of exercise, such as a brisk walk, five times per week, can significantly benefit one’s health. Walking lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and overall health of the muscles, bones and joints.

Daily classes incorporate walks on the facility’s lush and wooded nature trails. “Walking increases both activity and mindfulness,” Dawes says, “allowing women to be present and connected to their surroundings. All women need opportunities to let go and de-stress, including our staff of care-givers and clinicians. We all need to take time for self-care and to nurture ourselves.”

Brookhaven Retreat Prepares for the Holiday Season

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) December 02, 2014

November and December are months spent with loved ones, gathering gifts, preparing delicious feasts and managing a busy travel schedule. Though often expressed as a season of joy and celebration, the holidays may cause overwhelming stress and exhaustion that can take a toll on a woman’s emotional and mental health. As the year winds down, Brookhaven Retreat provides each woman in its residential treatment program with the essential skills to overcome any obstacles this holiday season.

There are many possible triggers presented over the holidays that can make women with mood disorders and substance abuse issues vulnerable. Traveling, family, stress and exhaustion can all interfere with maintaining her healthy habits and daily routines.

Women who have experienced trauma or struggle with the loss of a loved one may have a difficult time coping during the holiday season. Frequent get-togethers and celebrations can provoke painful memories and intense anxiety that may trigger a relapse into unhealthy coping mechanisms such as self-medicating and self-injury.

During treatment, women learn the importance of avoiding unnecessary triggers including disruptions in sleep, excess financial stress, unrealistic expectations and unhealthy social environments. Women are taught it is okay to decline an invitation if it compromises her emotional, mental or physical health and learn how to set healthy boundaries.

Brookhaven Retreat encourages women to not feel overcome by the pressures of the holiday season, but rather enjoy the time spent with loved ones, avoid unnecessary anxiety or stress and practice self-care. Maintaining a healthy routine of sleep, exercise, nutrition and medication helps women stay focused on their recovery, even during the busy holiday season.
